Birthday of the famous ethnographer and Traveler Nikolai Nikolaevich Miklukho-maklai, became a pretext for the representatives of different ethnographic schools 17 July annually celebrate the ethnographer. This professional relatively "young" holiday that has no official status, illuminates the middle of summer, full of discoveries and updating existing data wider found in expeditions.

Who has the idea of observance Day ethnographer R.f. Ilc was the first head of the Department of Ethnography and anthropology of historical Faculty of Spbsu. It is undeniable that practices and ethnographic expeditions make saturated mid-July. Therefore, starting with the holiday 70-80 XX century quite quickly gained among professionals in the field of popularity and gained some personal tradition. Attributes of the celebration is not very diverse. Nevertheless, developed a constancy and perseverance for the distribution of the holiday.

Each agency or Expeditionary detachment has developed a series of rules of this summer day, but overall are:
• feast on toast in honor of Nicholas miklouho-Maclay and Rudolf Itza;
• initiation of novices, participating in expeditions or neophytes, that is their second title.
