When I first heard about the international white cane day, celebrated annually on October 15, many may think about another quirky holiday tradition. But in reality things are much more serious. The white cane is an international symbol of the blind and the disabled, established on the initiative shown by the World Federation of the blind.
White cane became such symbolism is not accidental. In 1921 year young Englishman James Biggs, professionally photograph in an accident completely lost his sight. He had to re-learn to live in a world where total darkness prevailed. He didn't want to feel left out and decided to exist, as all able-bodied people. Moving through the streets of his native Bristol young man realized that neither drivers nor the other pedestrians completely ignore neither to him nor to his black cane with which aesthetic reasons there were many Englishmen of his era. Then he decided to repaint his cane in signal white to color his noticed from afar and not subjected to neither him, nor his life and health hazard. Soon spread among blind Bigsa innovation across Europe, America and Russia.
So 15 October is not a holiday, but rather a signal for help, sign, drawing attention to the general problem of the whole world in General, and people with disabilities, in particular. Starting with the year 1987, this date is celebrated in Russia. Be careful and caring about people who are forced to keep in hand a white cane!
