The emergence of departments of Criminology in pre-revolutionary Russia is closely linked to the need for forensic examination. In Russia long before the October revolution practiced different techniques for investigation, interrogation, confrontation, searches and other investigative activities. However, genuine scientific interest to the systematization and analysis of the collected evidence appeared in 1864, after judicial reform, which brought an end to the theory of formal evidence.
